With increasing numbers of people choosing to start a business from home, the role of home-based enterprises has never been more important. According to Enterprise Nation, this vital sector contributes £300 billion to the UK economy. Many would find this surprising – so there is a need to shine a spotlight on ‘kitchen table entrepreneurs’ across the country.
Of the record 5.2 million businesses currently trading in the UK, over 60 per cent are run from home. And they are part of a proud British tradition – some of the great businesses of our time were once garage or kitchen table start-ups.
Today it is easier than ever before to get a business off the ground
Today it is easier than ever before to get a business off the ground. With high speed broadband and cloud storage both cheaper and more readily available, more and more people are choosing to launch businesses from home, benefiting from the affordability and flexibility it offers. There is perhaps no better place to start than in your kitchen or back bedroom, without the commute to work, or the overhead costs of maintaining an office.
However, as liberating as starting a business from home can be, it can also be isolating. The millions of people running home businesses across the UK can feel isolated, lacking a broader support network and remaining unaware of their contribution to the UK economy.
That is why Vonage is bringing together a community of 100 home-based businesses through the Home Business 100. We want to champion the huge importance of home businesses to the UK economy, and enable a better understanding of their potential and needs.
The Home Business 100 represents 100 of the UK’s most outstanding and diverse businesses
The Home Business 100 represents 100 of the UK’s most outstanding and diverse businesses to originate, operate and prosper from home. It will provide a hub for home businesses to share advice, insight and best practice, and to voice the ambitions, hopes and fears shared by many businesses operating from home.
The community will also offer a unique platform for entrepreneurs to have their say on important issues, such as raising finance, marketing and dealing with red tape.
I’m really proud to be championing this initiative and encourage everyone to take a look at the fantastic businesses on this site and hear about their incredible stories.
